In June 2024, I read a message in the online version of the Gelderlander from someone who had a suitcase full of photos, slides, and films. She wanted to get rid of the suitcase, but thought it would be nice if it went to someone who loved old photos.
So I contacted Janneke. That same day, she showed me her travel-loving uncle's suitcase. Inside was a portrait of a handsome young man: Uncle Maarten.
Maarten traveled extensively for his work and was a skilled photographer. Most of his photos were taken in the late 1950s and 1960s. Of particular note are the films of well-known cities and a large collection of slides from the whaling ship "Willem Barendsz."
