Old photos are often fascinating and a bit mysterious. Who took the photo, when, where, and why? Who or what exactly is in the picture? I love these puzzles and the glimpse back in time that old photos offer us.
That's why I search for old photos at markets, thrift stores, and online auctions. Or rather, I prefer (glass) negatives, because then you're more certain you've got the original.
I've already found quite a few historical gems, a selection of which I'll showcase on this website. Take, for example, "Maarten's Suitcase." I found it through advertisements in a regional newspaper. The suitcase was full of slides and 16mm film. I received the suitcase some 60 years after the pictures were taken from Maarten's niece. The suitcase also contained two boxes of slides from the whaling ship "Willem Barentz."
