“Willem Barendsz”

The "Maarten's Suitcase" contained two boxes of slides labeled "Willem Barendsz." This refers to the Willem Barendsz II. This can be deduced from the fact that a photo of the Bloemendael is included. The Bloemendael is the new name for the Willem Barendsz I. The Willem Barendsz II is a whaling ship that was used for nine different expeditions between 1955 and 1964.

The photos show at least Table Mountain in Cape Town and the "Monument to the Fallen" in Willemstad. It's unclear what Maarten, the owner of the suitcase containing the slides, was doing on the Willem Barendsz. He is likely (based on other photos) the young man in the pillory in one of the photos. The gallery is in two parts; many will find the second part shocking..
